Modern Perms Are Nothing Like You Remember
If the word “perm” still makes you picture crunchy, frizzy curls from the 1980s, it is time for an update. Modern perms look completely different — and the techniques behind them have changed just as much.
At Aura Salon in Cedar City, we do perms that create soft, natural-looking texture. Whether you want loose beach waves, voluminous body, or defined curls, today’s perm process is designed to give you movement without the crunch.
What Changed About Perms?
The biggest difference is the products. Modern perm solutions are gentler on your hair than anything available 30 years ago. They are formulated to work with your hair’s natural texture instead of forcing it into a shape it does not want to hold.
The other major change is rod selection. Instead of uniform small rods that produced those signature tight curls, stylists now use a range of rod sizes and wrapping techniques to create more natural-looking results. Larger rods produce soft waves. Mixed sizes create lived-in texture. The rod choice depends entirely on the look you want.
What Does a Modern Perm Look Like?
Most clients who come to Aura Salon for a perm are looking for one of these results:
- Soft body waves — loose, flowing movement that makes fine or flat hair look fuller
- Beach waves — that tousled, just-came-from-the-coast texture
- Defined curls — bouncy, structured curls with a natural fall pattern
- Root lift — volume at the root without curling the lengths
The result depends on your hair length, thickness, and condition, plus the rod size and wrapping pattern we choose during your consultation.
How the Process Works
A perm appointment at Aura Salon starts with a consultation. We talk about what you want, look at reference photos if you have them, and assess your hair’s current condition. If your hair has been heavily processed or damaged, we will be honest about whether a perm is a good fit right now.
Once we have a plan, the process goes like this:
- Sectioning and wrapping — your hair is wrapped around rods in a specific pattern based on the curl type and placement you want
- Processing — a perm solution is applied and left to work for a set amount of time, which varies by hair type
- Neutralizing — a second solution locks in the new shape
- Rinse and style — we rinse, remove the rods, and style your new texture
The whole appointment typically takes one and a half to two and a half hours, depending on hair length and thickness.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
Modern perms work well on most hair types, but they work best on hair that has not been heavily bleached or chemically treated recently. If your hair is healthy and you want more texture, volume, or curl than your natural hair provides, a perm is worth considering.
They are especially popular with people who:
- Have naturally straight or flat hair and want more body
- Spend a lot of time curling their hair every morning and want a lasting result
- Want low-maintenance texture that air-dries well
How Long Does a Perm Last?
A perm typically lasts three to six months, depending on your hair type, how fast it grows, and how you care for it. As your hair grows out, the new growth will be your natural texture, and the permed ends will gradually loosen. Most people either get a fresh perm or let it grow out gracefully.
Aftercare Matters
The first 48 hours after a perm are the most important. You should not wash your hair, put it in a ponytail, or pin it during that time. After that, using a sulfate-free shampoo and scrunching with a curl cream or mousse will help your perm look its best between washes.
We go over all of this at the end of your appointment so you leave knowing exactly how to take care of your new texture.
